What is an M.D., O.D., or D.O.?

M.D.: Abbreviation for the Latin title Medicinae Doctor, Doctor of Medicine.

  • An authorized practitioner of medicine, as one graduated from a college of medicine or osteopathy and licensed by the appropriate board.


O.D.
: Abbreviation for Doctor of Optometry

  • Optometrists examine, diagnose, treat, and manage diseases, injuries, and disorders of the visual system, the eye, and associated structures as well as identify related systemic conditions affecting the eye.


D.O.
: Abbreviation for Doctor of Osteopathy.

  • A fully licensed osteopathic physicians who specialize in all areas of medicine; founded on philosophy of treating people, not just symptoms.
